iTunes 10.4.1 released

Apple released iTunes 10.4.1 on the 22 August which provides a number of improvements, including:
Fixes a problem where the media keys on some third-party keyboards work inconsistently with iTunes.
Addresses issues with adding artwork to songs and videos.
Resolves an issue which may cause iTunes to become unresponsive when purchasing an HD movie.
Fixes a problem where iTunes may take longer than expected to open after waking your Mac from sleep.
Addresses issues with VoiceOver support.

The download weighs in at 90.26 MB (Mac) and 77.47 MB (Win 32) or 78.32 MB (Win 64).

Vodacom USB modem drivers for Lion

The new drivers that come with a Vodacom USB modem have just been impossible to install on OS X Lion. The installation hangs about 40% and if it ever does complete, then it fails to recognise the device. I’ve downloaded the “latest” drivers from Vodacom and they work perfectly. I thought I’d share it with you guys if you are having problems as well. These drivers are for all Huawei models. The installer does however say that this is only a Preview of Vodafone Mobile Broadband for Mac OS X 10.7 Lion and will expire on 9th September 2011. Following that date, please download the full OS X 10.7 Lion-ready release from the Vodafone Support website as soon as possible. The standard installation requires 68mb free disk space.

Lion 10.7.1 update released

Apple has finally released the long awaited Lion 10.7.1 update. The update is quite small, ranging from 17mb for the client version to 88mb for the server version, not the usual 300mb – 600mb we normally see for an update. A reboot is required after the installation and Apple does recommend you backup your system first.

The update note:
The 10.7.1 update is recommended for all users running OS X Lion and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability and compatibility of your Mac, including fixes that:
1. Address an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari
2. Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out
3. Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections
4. Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and compatible applications to a new Mac running OS X Lion

Firefox 6 released

I’ve never been that much a fan of Firefox – Im more Safari kinda guy. This release of Firefox has really blown me away with its speed. Pages open way quicker and the fast tabs are just brilliant. I also love the idea of Group Tabs – kinda like Mission Control if Lion in Firefox. There has been loads of tweaks like a better security and data privacy. A new permissions manager, accessible by typing “about:permissions” in the address bar, lets users set site-specific permissions to control acceptance of cookies, location sharing, pop-ups, and password and data storage. Other enhancements and features include :

1. Faster Tab Groups : Debuted in Firefox 4, this feature allows for less clutter. The speed has been greatly improved and bugs fixed – especially where tabs switched groups after a restart.

2. Enhanced Site Identity Block : Some enhances made here which allow users to easily see if they are browsing a legit site after all the fake banking sites floating around in South Africa.

3.Improved Sync : syncing your bookmarks, history, passwords, and other settings between your desktop Firefox and Firefox Mobile, now plays a more prominent role in the browser.

4. New Android Version : The Android version has been improved with a streamlined look and better navigation.

These are just a few of the improvements. I think this version of Firefox is a definite winner and really puts Firefox in the fore run in the race of the web browsers.

Mac OS X Lion comes with some cool wallpapers but none of them include the Mission Control wallpaper. I managed to extract the wallpaper so feel free to download. In case you don’t know, just drag and drop the walloper into your main OS Hard Drive —> Library —> Desktop Pictures.

How to make a OSX Lion USB install drive

Hi all. This tutorial if for the FINAL version of Mac OSX Lion. Once you have Lion downloaded from the App Store it will want to install. Do not install just yet. It will however be available in your Applications folder. Once you have a bootable USB stick, you will not need to have the latest version of Snow Leopard as well. This is for a fresh install.

Please note that this tutorial applies to an external hard drive as well. I have a 160GB external that has 3 partitions. One for Snow Leopard install DVD, one for Lion install DVD and the rest for storage of applications and updates.

Requirements:
1. Mac OSX install App from the App Store
2. Running version of Snow leopard or earlier OSX
3. Minimum 8GB USB Stick or 5GB partition on an external USB Drive. (For this tutorial I will be using a 16GB KingMax partitioned into 5GB for Lion and 11GB for other stuff).
4. Some time and a Coke
5. Some knowledge of Disk Utility.

How To:
1. Download Mac OSX Lion from the App Store. It will then be available in your Applications folder and should be about 3.7GB.

2. Using Disk Utility, format your USB stick and name it OSX Lion Install (or anything cool)

3. Right click the downloaded Mac OSX Lion install app and select SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. Then navigate to CONTENTS —> SHARED SUPPORT —-> and double click / mount InstallESD.dmg

4. Once mounted, open Disk Utility again – if you closed it. Select your USB Stick and in the tab on top tab select RESTORE.

5. Drag and drop the mounted Mac OS X Install ESD to the SOURCE input, then drag and drop the newly named OSX Lion Install partition to the DESTINATION input (see pic below). Click RESTORE and drop down will appear asking if you want to Erase, choose ERASE. You may need to enter your password.

6. The copy process will start. Should take about 10minutes.

6a. Please note that the partition will be renamed to Mac OS X Install ESD. You can rename back to OSX Lion Install if you want.

7. Once the process has completed, restart your Mac and hold down the ALT key before the Apple logo appears. You will now be able to select the new OSX Lion Install partition. Select it using your keyboard and hit ENTER. Enjoy Lion.

Although i’m still on the 2G iPhone with OS 3.0, there’s one thing I cannot do without and that’s my iPhone. It’s become an intricate part of my daily life. With over 450 apps downloaded as well on my Mac, I’ve managed to sift out the important ones that I now can’t do without. Here’s a list of my favourite top ten apps:
